George Marton: An Inventive Film Agent

Gertraud Steiner Daviau (Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, Vienna)

ABSTRACT:

ABSTRACT:

George Marton was doubtless one of the most colorful and fascinating personalities in the cultural life of Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and Hollywood in the 20th century. As a theatre and film agent and gifted networker, he influenced and built numerous careers. In emigration in Hollywood between 1939 and 1948 he contributed essentially in introducing film personalities and film authors as well as topics from Middle Europe to Hollywood. In addition to his outstanding professional role George Marton was also a unique personality representing central European culture. He was like d by everyone, especially women. He was not just an agent out to earn money, but he helped everyone at times of need, from his family to his clients.

His success as an agent was very much the result of his innovative ways in his business: he was one of the first to have the idea to sell old operettas to Hollywood as film material, which made him rich in the thirties. His other innovation was to have theatre plays produced like film scripts: through the collaboration of several writers. Marton would outline the plot, and the authors from his agency would develop a theatre play out of it. Some of the productions, like "Bei Kerzenschein", became worldwide successes.
