ABSTRACT:

Today, multilingualism is characterised not only by the multiplicity of languages and varieties across the globe but also by the positive evolution in the language contact phenomenon. This situation has often led to the creation of new speech forms especially in urban and semi-urban areas. However besides reflecting the transformation of such societies, contact between languages is an aspect of socio-cultural dynamics. In this regard, multilingualism and language contact could be seen as important parameters in observing transformation in societies, be they developed or developing. This situation assumes universal dimensions given that in the present-day multilingual world the study of the evolution of language provides deep insights into the study of the transformation of societies.
