European integration is today indisputable, albeit not always greeted
with much enthusiasm. Unlike the cultural patriotism that accompanied
the consolidation of the European nation states in the 19th Century,
there seems today to be no convincing communal feeling of being European.
Despite the numerous political, economic, legal and military institutions
now linking the European nations, institutions supporting a politically
independent public sphere have hardly formed on the European level.
The work of this section will explore openings for the construction
of European identity in literature and other media and also pose the
question whether, in this age of economic and cultural globalisation
and with the considerable migration from other continents, Europe itself
has become an outdated concept as a focus for identification. Papers
e.g. on the following topics are welcome.
- Is European Integration a regional variant of the globalisation

- Do “European values” exist?
- Is there a European public sphere?
- Can we speak of European Literature?
- The theme Europe in literature, film etc.
- Exiled and migrant cultures
- Is today’s Europe still European?

Die europäische Integration ist heute eine unleugbare Realität,
auch wenn ihr in der Regel keine ungeteilte Begeisterung begegnet. Anders
als in der Konsolidierungsphase der Nationalstaaten im 19. Jahrhundert,
als ein kultureller Patriotismus die nationale Politik begleitete, scheint
es in Europa bislang kein überzeugendes „Wir-Gefühl“
zu geben. Es fällt auf, dass trotz der Vielzahl politischer, wirtschaftlicher,
juristischer und militärischer Institutionen, gerade die Institutionen,
die eine politisch unabhängige Öffentlichkeit schaffen könnten,
noch gar nicht auf europäischer Ebene strukturiert sind. In dieser
Sektion soll nach Ansätzen europäischer Identitätskonstruktion
in Literatur und anderen Medien gesucht werden, wobei sich auch die
Frage stellt, ob nicht angesichts der wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen
Globalisierung sowie der erheblichen Zuwanderung aus anderen Erdteilen
bereits Europa selbst als identitätsstiftender Rahmen überholt
ist. Referate z.B. zu folgenden Fragestellungen bieten sich an.
- Ist der europäische Integrationsprozess nur als regionale
Variante der Globalisierung zu verstehen?
- Gibt es europäische Werte?
- Gibt es eine europäische Öffentlichkeit?
- Kann man von einer europäischen Literatur sprechen?
- Europa als Thema der Literatur, des Films usw.
- Exil- und Migrantenkulturen
- Ist das heutige Europa überhaupt noch europäisch?
