ABSTRACT: The history of Jewry with its transnational culture has for at least 2000 years been forming a unifying aspect among European - and also many non-European - cultural nations. The significance and importance of the unifying character of Jewry has been increasing in the last two centuries, ever since the emancipation and assimilation of Jews. The emancipated Jewish bourgeoisie has established itself impressively not only in many important professions of the modern market economy, but also in all areas of culture and art. This tendency is demonstrable in the many countries, where Jews live.

The unifying aspect of Jewish culture can be observed in two respects: a) Jews in the individual countries are connected to those across borders in other countries by virtue of their common "Jewish" characteristics, and b) because of its specific, complex "transnational national character" (German-Jewish, Hungarian-Jewish, French-Jewish, American-Jewish, among others), Jewry forms an important unifying element among nations.

This section welcomes contributions, which present the history and conflicts, the tragedy and greatness, the complexity and particularity of Jewish culture in terms of concrete examples or in comprehensive treatments. Reports of relevant research projects and functioning Institutions are also cordially invited.
