Berman, Nina, PhD (University of California at Berkeley, 1994), is Associate Professor of Comparative Studies and German Studies at The Ohio State University. Previous appointment: University of Texas at Austin, 1994-2001. She is the author of Impossible Missions? German Economic, Military, and Humanitarian Efforts in Africa (Lincoln, NE: University of Nebraska Press, 2004) and Orientalismus, Kolonialismus und Moderne: Zum Bild des Orients in der deutschsprachigen Kultur um 1900 (Stuttgart: Metzler, 1997). Articles on: orientalism; colonialism; minority literature; modernization; multiculturalism; tourism; Karl May; Hugo von Hofmannsthal; Ernst Udet; Albert Schweitzer; Bodo Kirchhoff; Salim Alafenisch. She is currently working on a study, entitled Beyond Orientalism: Germany and the Middle East.
