Clej, Alina M. is Associate Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She graduated English and French at the University of Bucharest and obtained her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley. Her publications include A Genealogy of the Modern Self: Thomas De Quincey and the Intoxication of Writing (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1995), Thomas De Quincey, Autobiographic Sketches, in Works of Thomas De Quincey, vol. 10 (London: Pickering & Chatto Publishers Ltd., 2003), and articles on French, English, and American writers. She is currently working on the study Playing with Fire: Surrealism and Politics between the War” and Writing in Exile, which obviously shows her deep interest in French culture.
