Dassanowsky, Robert von: is Associate Professor of German and Film, Chair of the Department of Languages and Cultures and Director of Film Studies at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He is Co-Director of the Austrian American Film Association (AAFA) and founding Vice President of the International Alexander Lernet-Holenia Society. His 1996 study on the novels of Lernet-Holenia, Phantom Empires, was instrumental in stimulating new international interest in this author. His work on Leni Riefenstahl, particularly the examination of her film Tiefland as a self-reflective commentary on the filmmaker’s relationship with authoritarianism has also been extensively discussed. A widely published poet and translator, Dassanowsky has written for the stage and television, and is an independent film producer. Additionally, he is the Editor of The Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America, Editorial Advisor to the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers, Cinema Series Editor for the University Press of the South and a columnist for Austria’s cinema magazine, Celluloid. Dassanowsky serves on the board of TIE: The International Experimental Film Exposition and the Denver BritishFilm Festival and was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2001. His book, Austrian Cinema: A History, the first comprehensive study of this national cinema in English, is forthcoming in late 2005.
