Elicker, Martina – TRANS

Elicker, Martina studied English and French at the University of Graz, Austria; Rider University, NJ; Columbia University, NY; Indiana University, Bloomington, IN; and UCLA, Los Angeles, CA. In 1995, she received her doctorate degree from the University of Graz. She has predominately been teaching within the field of applied language studies and linguistics at the English Department of the University of Graz since 1994. Her main fields of research include semiotics (with a focus on the analysis of the connection between language and music), sociolinguistics, dialectics and phonetics, in which she has published numerous works.

She is the author of Semiotics of Popular Music. The Theme of Loneliness in Mainstream Pop and Rock Songs (Tübingen 1997), and has published several articles on the relationship of language and music in popular music, among them “Popular Music in the Age of the Video Clip,” Arbeiten aus Anglistik und Amerikanistik (1998), “Illustration, Amplification, and Disjuncture in Popular Music Video Clips.
