Espey, David, Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and teaches in the English Department of the University of Pennsylvania. Among his interests are modern British and American literature, the literature of travel, and creative non-fiction. His publications include articles on George Orwell, Paul Bowles, John McPhee, and American war and travel writing about Vietnam. He has been visiting Fulbright Professor at Osaka University in Japan; Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey; and Mohamed V University in Morocco. He also visited Vietnam as a Fulbright Lecturer. He is a Visiting Professor this year at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, Turkey. A specialist in modern prose, especially the literature of travel, Dr. Espey is currently Vice President of the International Society for Travel Writing.
His most recent book is Writing the Journey: Essays, Stories, and Poems on Travel (Longman, 2004), a collection of works ranging from Francis Bacon’s “On Travel” to Annie Dillard’s “Sojourner”. Among the courses Dr. Espey has taught are Hollywood and the American Novel; American Traveler; and Orwell and Hemingway. He taught Road Books, Road Movies in 2006.
