Noyes, John K. is Professor of German and Chair of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto. He was born in Oregon, USA, and educated in Australia and South Africa. He has held fellowships and visiting professorships at Cornell, Chicago, and Johannesburg. He is the author of books and articles on the cultural history of colonialism, postcolonial theory and the history of sexuality. His books include Colonial Space: Spatiality in the Discourse of German Southwest Africa (1992), The Mastery of Submission (1997), The Paths of Multiculturalism (with Maria Alzira Seixo 2000) and Nomadism, Nomadology, Postcolonialism” (special edition of Interventions, 2004). His current research projects are on colonialism and uneven development in late Enlightenment Germany; and Africa in Germany’s postcolonial imagination.
