Stoican, Elena graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest, in 2002. As an undergraduate student she specialised in English and Hindi languages and literatures. She took courses in linguistics, civilisation and literature. Between 2003–2004 she did her MA in British Cultural Studies, focusing on postcolonial studies (British-Indian relations). Since then, her academic interests have included postcolonial Indian literatures, migrations, ethnic relations and postcommunism.
She took part in several international conferences and published two papers so far: Ethnic Stereotypes Concerning Gypsies in Romanian Folk Tales (October 2004) and Postcolonial Challenges in Vikram Chandra’s Love and Longing in Bombay (March 2005). At present she is a first-year PhD candidate at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, with a research topic on postcolonial Indian literature written in English by female Indian authors (both from the diaspora and resident in India).
