19 scholars from 12 countries came together in Schlaining to analyse the
new situation in cultural studies worldwide. Some of the results of this
conference are:
-
Within the process of globalisation we as scholars have some common experiences.
The main point is that the process of globalisation as conceived now is
concentrated on economics and technology.
-
Without creating spaces for cultural studies the potential of culture to
facilitate processes of national and international understanding and resolution
of conflicts cannot be realised, since „war starts in the mind and peace
starts in the mind“.
-
UNESCO as an international organisation should support in this connection
the sophisticated infrastructure of communication as a basis for new information
worldwide. UNESCO should directly support inter- and transdisciplinary
studies in the area of cultural and peace studies at regional, national,
inter- and transnational levels.
-
Based on „Our Creative Diversity“ cultural studies as a special part of
civil society is in a position to make a crucial contribution to world
peace.
The participants of this conference request UNESCO to give its serious
consideration to this resolution.
