Conference Report on Comparative Cultural Studies

1. Content description of workshop panels: Comparative Cultural Studies, workshop panels convened by Steven Totosy at the international conference Die Gleichzeitigkeit des Ungleichzeitigen / The Contemporaneousness of the Non-Contemporaneous, organized and hosted by the Research Institute for Austrian and International Literature and Cultural Studies, Vienna, Austria, 6-8 December 2002.
    
2. The workshop organizer received 28 abstracts following the call for papers for participation in the workshop panels. 19 papers were selected for presentation in thematic sections as follows. Section 1: Culture, Cultural Policy, and the Media; Section 2: Culture and Otherness; Section 3: Culture, Autobiography, and Translation; and Section 4: Aspects of Literature and Perspectives of Culture. From the 19 participants accepted 12 participants presented papers at the conference.
    
3. The thematic distribution of the papers presented occurred in areas and fields including multi- and inter-culturality in literature, film, the media, politics, history, education, etc., and the topics in the panels ranged from theoretical frameworks to interpretations of cultural products in literature and film to cultural administration and politics with regard to imagology, diasporic and ethnic literature, etc. In all panels there was extended discussion, in particular on papers about contemporary issues such as anti-Semitism and gender studies.
    
4. Participants in the panels will submit a paper for publication to the journal Trans: Internet-Zeitschrift für Kulturwissenschaften - Internet Journal for Cultural Studies - Revue électronique de recherches sur la culture.
