We construct texts out of signs and cultures out of texts. Semiotics is concerned with the "Life of the sign in the life of society" (Saussure). Socio-Semiotics especially deals with signs - and thus with conflicts of meaning. On the one hand, by means of signs (language, symbols, pictures, body language etc.) power is exerted, on the other hand, power uses the same things. One speaks of "strong signs" or also of "mere symbols" - in each case, according to the context, sign, power and impotence are closely connected and determine our worlds. This volume, which is the result of an international symposium, reexamines the entire complex of problems in theory and practice. Main sections: Ethics and Orientation, Theory, Politics, Film und the Media, Art and Literature.
