Notion of Migration: On Its Reflection in Mind of a Native Speaker of English

Maxim G. V. Belau (Tambov, Russian Federation)

ABSTRACT:

Migration is rather complicated phenomenon that has been going on in society within its development.

By the use of conceptual analysis - which is, perhaps, the key method of Cognitive Linguistics - it becomes clear that migration is none other than physical or mental process of smb’s or smth’s moving. Analyzing a concept "MIGRATION" and then its conceptual characteristics, it becomes obvious as well that for native speakers of English the essence of migration consists of: a) smb’s or smth’s physical moving from one geographical and social environment to another; b) mental moving of such things as cultural wealth, customs and traditions, modes of life and ways of thinking. Besides, it must be said that migration causes different changes in cultural, social and political life of society. It should be noted that these changes too are conceptualized by mind as physical or mental processes of moving which has different direction. It means that migration could cause both innovations and a certain regress as well.

These are the main points the paper deals with:

  • Concept "MIGRATION" and its representation in modern English literature and mass media by means of verbs of motion;
  • Socio-cultural innovations as a component of the concept "MIGRATION".
