ABSTRACT:
In this paper I will present language contact phenomena which are not only linguistically creative but also add new shades of cultural meaning to both languages. The examples are taken from a corpus of bilingual speech produced by Viennese Jewish refugees living in London, UK. The code-switches, borrowings, loanshifts and loanblends that will be analyzed may be grammatical or ungrammatical, semantically “normal” and anomalous, but they are all productive and innovative and create new and subtle shades of cultural meaning, be it on a temporary basis.
