Globalisation and Text Technology in African Languages

Presley Ifukor (Institute of Cognitive Science, University of Osnabrück)

ABSTRACT:

The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is one of the areas of technological advancement that demonstrates man’s ability to engineer artificial intelligent systems to codify, analyze, transform and process human languages creatively and dynamically. NLP represents the attempts of modern man to universalize the ideals of the western world in creating a ‘global language’, at least from the utility point of view. To what extent are African languages already affected by joining the global digital village? Are the African socio-cultural ideals reflected in this globalisation drive? In this paper, we assess the innovative ideas in African languages’ text technology, and the global impacts on the African culture and linguistic consciousness.
