From Criticism to Text: Modernity in the Making

ABSTRACT:

This paper adresses the ways in which «criticks» of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries helped to define the characteristics and status of Modern texts, not only in the querelle but also in linguistic and even generally artistic aspects. Authors to consider are, among others, Montaigne, Richelieu, Shaftesbury, Kant. Related subjects, like humour or philosophy will also be put in perspective.
