Intending to assure knowledge and relevance in humanities, quite often “the old Greeks” are quoted - particularly with audience outside of the subject area. Plato’s Cave Allegory is used as proof of constructivist theories of cognition or Heraklit’s idea of “panta rhei” is a good argument for managing changes. Does such a proceeding not imply a stagnation of knowledge in humanities and philosophy? Does it obviously not evidence that our technical, economic, and political situations were revolutionized during the last 2500 years, but meanwhile our mental and social skills stood still? This could be seen as the central cause for the most urgent problems in today’s world. Right now again, technical solutions promise to revolutionize ways of communication: intelligent networks, exponentiation of interchange, neutralization of time and space, unlimited access to global knowledge. That’s a paradise for communication and cognition, isn’t it? This presentation inspects these chances and limitations from a humanities’ perspective, and at the same time aims to inspire with communicative innovations, communicational research and development beyond new technologies. |
