Visible Multilingualism.
Congress ventures new forms of communication

"The Unifying Aspects of Cultures" stands as the central theme of an international meeting being held from 7 to 9 November in the Austria Center in Vienna. Processes of communication in the realms of culture of the 21st century are a main emphasis of the three-day conference. 4.000 participants from 70 countries are expected.

A series of internationally-renowned experts from the fields of science, art, culture and politics will focus on the "links" between cultures. The talks and their translations will be projected on large screens. "This visible multilingualism represents an open access to cultures and makes the processes of exchange visible." says Herbert Arlt, Director of the INST and coordinator of the conference.

Open communication can also be seen in the fact that the entire large conference was organized over the Internet. Extensive information is available to the public at http://www.inst.at/kulturen/index_e.htm Anyone interested can still register for the congress at this same web site until 31 October. For students, pupils and groups the daily fee (from 10 Euro) is reduced.

The conference is organized by the "Institute for the Study of Austrian and International Literary Processes" (INST), located in Vienna. A virtual opening speaker will be the world-renowned linguist and author Noam Chomsky. The congress is supported by UNESCO, recommended by the European Council, stands under the patronage of the President of Austria Dr. Thomas Klestil and offers a wide-ranging cultural supplementary program (exhibit, music, films, radio plays).
