Archiving the Internet - Challenges, Projects, and the Austrian Perspective
Andreas Rauber (Vienna)

The information present in the World Wide Web is increasingly recognized as an important contribution to the world's cultural heritage.

Consequently, a growing number of research projects is addressing issues related to the preservation of Web content. Apart from the immediate challenges regarding the acquisition and storage of Web-based information, long-term preservation and the availability of such archives provide
fascinating research areas.

This talk will provide an overview of the most prominent challenges encountered with respect to archiving the Internet and discuss possible solutions. Furthermore, an overview of various archivation projects will be provided, as well as an account of the current state of Austria's initiatives.

Papers held at the conference "Knowledge Networking in Cultural Studies" are published in
TRANS. Internet journal for Cultural Studies, No. 10/2001
