ABSTRACT:
Modern communication has a great influence on everyday communication especially among young people.
The aim of this paper is to show how modern communication (chat, e-mail, SMS) influences the lexis of students at the University of Zadar. This research comprises results obtained by a survey among students of language departments (Croatian, English, German, Italian, French) and Teacher-Training College.
The survey investigates (a) the use of acronyms, emotics and abbreviations in modern communication via e-mail, chat and SMS; (b) appearance of English loan words from computer technology field in modern communication.
It is to expect that these students will have sufficient communication skills and language knowledge in order to communicate with younger generations when they get involved in the education process.
