Unfortunately I cannot participate, as I would have liked, at the Multilinguality, Transnationality, Cultural studies Conference which takes place today in Vienna. I would therefore like to wish you success in your work and to restate here, at the end of 2001, the importance which I attach to linguistic diversity in Europe, especially the «transnationality» of exchanges, experiences and knowledge, which it permits. 2001 was the European Year of Languages, a joint initiative of the European Commission and the Council of Europe, to sensitise Europeans, all Europeans and Europeans of every age, to the necessity - but also the pleasure - of learning languages. A year of promotion, pilot projects, public events, teaching innovations, with the objective in the form of a slogan: mother tongue +2. Learning languages certainly opens the way to profiting from the right to studying, working and free circulation in the European Union. But it is also through a language that we discover and share others' literature and, on a larger scale, their culture and their identity. Europe is enriched by this diversity, these exchanges, this sharing and these are, for the future, the key words of the political project of European construction, which has been going on for a half-century. responsible for Culture and Education |
